It’s been a long time coming but I finally wrote a rant about word of mouth.
So many people glorify it — maybe you too?
You think it’s the best marketing tool out there.
You’re proud to say you get your clients through word of mouth.
You think you’re “lucky” to get it.
But that’s the thing: as soon as it stops, you’re not so lucky any more!
That is no way to run a business.
Here’s the reality (as I see it):
Word of mouth is what happens when you wait for clients to come to you. It’s essentially the same as taking whatever comes along. (Read my rant on the HOW Blog.)
There’s the simple solution, and it’s easy if you do the work.
- Decide whom you want to work with
- Introduce yourself to them and tell them why.
- Follow up.
- Stay in touch.
I elaborate on these 4 simple steps in my recent presentation for Digital Olympus, How Not To Stalk Your Prospects…and Still Get the Project. Watch the video here.)
