Will AI destroy Michael Katz’s newsletter business?

Or yours?

On Episode 532, Michael and I covered a lot of ground, including:

  • The 4 things he does to market his business
  • Why you shouldn’t try to do what the “big guys” do

In his email 5/30/25 newsletter, Michael wrote, "It may seem logical to copy "the big guys" when putting together your own marketing approach. After all, they are big and successful; they must know what they are doing, right? Well, yes... but. What works for them doesn't usually work for us."

I had a slightly different take that I wanted to discuss.

Because often, creative freelancers want to mimic what I do for my marketing.

But I've been in business for more than 35 years. That means I have a strong foundation of content marketing (which can have a really long tail, as they say) that has been building for a long, long time.

There are people who've been getting my email newsletter, Quick Tips, since I started them in the early 2000's.

Some people even remember receiving the pre-cursor print version (from the 90s!) of that marketing tool, The Art of Self Promotion. (This was before we called it "content marketing.")

So my strategy wouldn't make sense for a beginner, who would need to generate clients sooner rather than later. (BTW, that's what The Simplest Marketing Plan is all about.)

Anyway, we talked about that and much more!

It’s a meaty one so listen here (and below):

Here's another good one from Michael about email newsletter stats.
