Does content seem like the hardest part of launching a new web site? Are you wondering what the heck you’re going to say?
In my free report, Get Your Website Done: 12 Actionable Steps for Designers, we’re at Step #7: Write all of the Content…and I know this step can cause hesitation for some.
While some people excel at writing and are cool with doing it themselves, it can be a logjam for other folks. I bet you already know which side of the fence you’re on.
1) I’m cool with doing the writing myself.
2) Heck no, I’m not writing anything!
Either way, congratulations! You already have some clarity about your content and how it’s going to get created. Is it cheating to hire a copywriter? Absolutely not. A good writer will take your ideas and put them into your brand voice, so nobody ever even needs to know you didn’t do it yourself.
Whether you’re writing your own content or hiring a writer to help you—here’s what matters most:
Think about your ideal clients with every word. What does success mean for them? What do they really want? Truly understanding how what you’re selling helps your clients is key. How do they see it helping them? Though the words might come from you, it’s about them. Use your content to reflect your understanding of your ideal clients.
When it comes to content, you only need 5 pages. Arguably the most important is the home page. Ilise recently did a series of videos on Excellent Examples of Marketing-Smart Homepages (which I was excited to be included in along with some great company). The videos show home page examples for designers, agencies and copywriters.
Learn exactly what each page of your website should do in my latest blog post: Let’s get candid about content.
