So here’s one way I answer this question:
If it’s not working, you will know pretty soon. You won’t find the information you’re looking for. Prospects will respond negatively or with confusion. They won’t get what you’re talking about or why they need it.
Believe me, it will be very clear if you’re on the wrong track.
If you’re on the right track, however, it’s a lot less obvious. There will be silence, but you’ll also get nods and expressions of mild interest here and there — little “marketing wins,” as they were described by Emily Lewis and Lea Alcantara of Bright Umbrella when they interviewed me on their podcast, CTRL+CLICK CAST.
They also shared their strategy for tracking those “marketing wins” on a spreadsheet — the positive responses on social media and to their email newsletter, and especially the inquiries they can track back to their content marketing.
Tracking your marketing wins is important because during the long haul that is your marketing investment, you will see how the snowball builds and that you are, in fact, getting somewhere. (Gentle reminder: this takes patience.)
But if you don’t track it, you may not notice what is working or even that it’s working! (BTW I’m excited about a very cool Prospect Tracker we’re working on to help with that for the 2017 Marketing Plan. Watch for that on Black Friday!)
Listen to our entire conversation here….Emily and Lea shared so much about how they are integrating the 3 main marketing activites — networking, content marketing and outreach — with a focus on their chosen target markets.
