At 10 weeks old, Charlie was found wandering the streets of Jersey City NJ and taken to the Liberty Humane Society.
By luck or coincidence or maybe even Fate, it was on that exact day
that, after years of wanting a dog,Ilise decided it was time to get
one.
As-yet-unnamed, Charlie was the first dog
she saw: he was a 21-pound puppy the shelter workers called, “The
baby.” After his walk, he sat quietly between one of the
volunteer’s feet, looking up with those sweet, sweet eyes. Susan
said, “You’ve got to take this dog. He’s
wonderful.”
Ilise knew almost nothing about dogs,
especially what made for a wonderful or not so wonderful one, but Susan
seemed to know. So Ilise took the puppy for a walk (and only stepped on
him twice), then came back and promptly put her name down for him. She
was the first one to do so. (Charlie had to stay in the shelter for a
week in case someone claimed him.)
No one knows what mix of breeds Charlie is.
At his (hopefully) full grown 70 pounds, he looks like a combination of
Rottweiler (his sweet face), Rhodesian Ridgeback (his golden color),
Labrador (his short, practically non-shedding fur), Boxer (the way he
leans in and the way wiggles his butt) and maybe a little Pit Bull,
since all dogs in New Jersey seem to be “part-pit.”
He is submissive with people and playful
with other dogs, rolling over for anyone who’ll give him a belly
rub (he still does that with complete abandon and indiscrimination) and
goofily unfazed by dogs that growl and bark at him. He’s
extremely social – a Master Networker by nature -- but also
attentive and almost reflective, content to sit on a corner and watch
the streetlife.
At Marketing Mentor, Charlie’s
role is to take Ilise outside a few times a day, rain or shine, to do a
little outdoor networking. She sometimes needs someone to be
accountable to for that.
