Quick Tips from Marketing Mentor

The arrival of the recent issue of HOW Magazine jogged a memory.

It was the early ‘90s. I came across HOW in a client’s office. I picked it up, flipped through it and, although I had never written an article before, thought: I could write an article for this magazine! I took the magazine with me and wrote a letter to the editor, Laurel Harper, with an idea.

A few weeks later, I received a return letter from Laurel. She said,

“I like that idea. We’ll pay you $500.”

If I hadn’t done that…borrowed that magazine and written that letter—I would not be where I am today.

If I had said to myself:

-I’ve never written an article before…
-I’m no one…why would the editor of HOW respond to me?
-This idea probably isn’t good enough…

My career wouldn’t be where it is! Plain and simple.

Do you ever think about that? What one thing you did way back when that started the domino effect to where you are now? Or maybe that one decisive action is in your future?

My message to you is:

Do something.

You have no idea what the outcome will be.

Or where it will take you.

If you let discouraging voices stop you, you are removing the possibility for someone else to help you, to like your idea and to give you a chance. You are single-handedly shutting them down – and yourself.

Plus, who are you to decide anyway?

-Whether your idea is good enough…
-Whether they need your help…
-Whether you’re qualified enough…

It’s for them to decide!
