Hi, I'm Deidre. In my posts, I talk about my voyage down the road of self-employment as a website copywriter, my achievements and roadblocks along the way, and what I’m learning as I go (with Marketing Mentor as my guide).
When I started working for myself, I used to spend a lot of time beating myself up. I beat myself up for not making enough money, not having enough clients—and not doing enough to get more of these things.
If there was a day when I wasn’t busy, I would think, Wow, Deidre, you suck at this! How will you ever make this work?
Now, things are different. I’m getting better at riding the waves.
When I’m not super busy, I take advantage. I go for a run, take a little time for myself, or finish up at 4:30 instead of 7 so I can cook dinner. And yes, I take a little extra time on LinkedIn, work on my personal marketing projects, and reach out to a few extra people—but I don’t have the same level of panic anymore.
Because now I know that I’m doing what I should be doing to keep my pipeline full.
This has made a world of difference. It’s given me peace of mind!
Now, if I get an extra hour or two, I don’t have to spend it having an emotional breakdown. I can spend it doing extra marketing, or I can spend some time recharging my batteries.
I think I beat myself up so much because I knew I wasn’t doing what I should or could be doing. Now I’m covering the basics—consistently—and while there’s always room for more, it’s a much more comfortable place to be.
I’ll be at CFC learning how to be even more effective with my marketing. If you'd like to join me, the early-bird discount ends April 1st!
Have you gotten better at riding the waves?
