One thing that kept popping into my head (during this insanely busy week) is what Jen Lombardi from Kiwi Creative called one of the ways she “F***ed Up As A New Freelancer.” Jen said:
“On a super slow day, I wouldn’t think logically (Oh my client must be on vacation or in meetings all day), no, I thought, Oh my God, my client hates me, they are never sending me any more work, and my business is certain to fail by the end of the month. On the flip side, if in a couple days, I would get really, really busy, I would freak out and think that I needed to rent an office and hire a staff of 20…”
Jen says it’s much better to monitor trends over time—and she’s right. Her tip has helped to put my busy week into perspective, because I know that next week, I’ll have plenty of extra time (that I’ll try to enjoy instead of worrying about impending business failure).
The truth is, if we keep doing our marketing, and keep reaching out, the pipeline will keep working. I don’t think it will ever be a 100% smooth, steady flow—that’s just not the way this self-employed life works—but Jen’s tip is a smart and sane way to approach an ever-changing situation.
