A Labor Day tribute to self-employment

Posted by Deidre Rienzo on

Hi, I'm Deidre. In my posts, I talk about my voyage down the road of self-employment as a web copywriter, my achievements and roadblocks along the way, and what I’m learning as I go (with Marketing Mentor as my guide).

The paychecks aren’t exactly steady. The money isn’t quite enough (yet!). And it’s hard work! Marketing requires tenacity. Pricing. Staying organized. Billing. Time-tracking. Getting new clients. And oh yeah, the actual work!

Sometimes I sleep too late. Other times I work too late. It’s a constant quest for balance. Sometimes, I play too much and don’t work enough. And sometimes, work is so much fun that it doesn’t feel like work at all.

We work on our blurbs. Refine our target markets. Send newsletters. Attend conferences. Pay taxes. Network. Have business accounts, business cards, and IT support people. But some people still think we “do stuff on the computer all day.” My brother (lovingly, I hope?) jokes that I finger-paint until Noon and then have nap time ‘til 2. (This is obviously not true. I prefer crayons and don’t nap until 3.)

That’s self-employed life. And I love it. I don’t want to change it for anything. I don’t want to stop. I don’t want to go back to Corporate America (where things really were easier in so many ways).

So this Labor Day, let’s pay tribute to the kind of work we want to do. The kind of work we love to do! And let’s do it better, stronger, and more fruitfully for another year.

Because after all: It’s in our hands. We make it what we want, and its potential is only limited by our motivation.

This Labor Day, here’s to our businesses! May we be happy and our motivation strong, may our clients be plentiful, and may the money pay the bills and then some!
